210 Things To Do, 1942 — The Doll Family at Home
Since many of you are probably experiencing snow and freezing temperatures, here is a fun indoor activity for your children or grandchildren. My younger sister and I loved these activity books when we were little and, because this book was published about a decade earlier, it is even cooler than the books I remember (the couch and table cover are my favorites). The instructions call for a hat box, which you probably don’t have, but you could use any sort of tallish box. I have reduced the size of the images just a bit, so you should be able to print the pages on 8 1/2″ x 11″ paper (click twice to enlarge, then save or print).
Note: Family, unfortunately, not included.

Poster Picture Book to Color — Peter Mabie, 1934
Last year I started scanning and cleaning this cute book by one of my favorite illustrators, Peter Mabie. About half of the 96 pages were uncolored, requiring only a little work in Photoshop to clean up the darkened paper. The remaining pages were all colored/scribbled on by a child using a black crayon (the most difficult color to remove), and therefore take much more time to clean.
Of course, I see these pictures as designs for adorable quilt blocks or embroidery on children’s clothing. To find other illustrations by Peter Mabie, simply type “Mabie” in the search box on my sidebar, or click on the Children’s Books category to browse my collection.

I’m finally done restoring these images, and in the process I figured out an easier Photoshop method for cleaning up the pictures that have been colored with dark crayons. It feels good to be able to preserve these cute drawings for current and future Peter Mabie fans.

Happy 67th Birthday to Me!
ABC Coloring Book for Labor Day
Here’s a cute undated coloring book which includes four different alphabet sets (jobs, fruit/vegetables/flowers, simple objects, and animals). I thought the jobs one would be perfect for Labor Day, with its quaint worker illustrations featuring children. Some of these jobs would surely be unfamiliar to children today (ice man, organ grinder, valet, yeoman, zinc worker), and they wouldn’t have been familiar to the childhood me, either. When my children were little, they would probably have associated several of these jobs with me (baker, laundress, quilter, upholsterer, and possibly junkman) or their dad (carpenter — since there’s no banker, candlemaker, cook or stained glass artist).
I love ABC books in general, but I have a soft spot for this one because I stitched the Q is for Quilter illustration in 2008 for part of my blog header. Sometimes I think about changing it, but I never do — I really like it.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Christmas Stories, Lois Lenski
If you’re anything like me, you’re looking at these adorable Lenski illustrations and thinking they would make wonderful embroideries. I would love to stitch any of the horizontal patterns on the yoke of a little girl’s dress or maybe on the bottom of an apron — curve and enlarge the design and you could embroider or appliqué a tree skirt. The trees with the little animals would be cute on Christmas stockings or apron pockets/bibs. The two vertical illustrations could be adapted for a stocking as well, or some of the small elements could be stitched on napkin corners. There are so many possibilities.
